Published on Apr 28, 2026

Duane Stephenson, born in 1976 in Kingston, Jamaica, is a celebrated roots reggae singer and songwriter whose music blends social commentary, romance, and spiritual themes. He grew up in August Town, a community that deeply shaped his worldview and later inspired some of his most powerful songs. He began his career as the lead vocalist for the band To-Isis, where he spent nearly a decade honing his craft before launching his solo journey in 2005. His debut album, From August Town (2007), released under VP Records, earned critical acclaim and was recognized by Billboard as part of a major roots reggae revival. The album featured standout tracks such as “August Town” and “Ghetto Pain.” Stephenson followed up with Black Gold (2010), which reached #1 on the Jamaica Music Countdown and included collaborations with reggae icons like Mutabaruka, Queen Ifrica, and Gramps Morgan. His third album, Dangerously Roots (2014), further solidified his international presence, charting in Europe and featuring a popular cover of Bunny Wailer’s “Cool Runnings.” Beyond music, Stephenson is known for his humanitarian work, including co-writing “A Step for Mankind” with The Wailers to support the United Nations World Food Programme. His later releases, including the single “Play That Song” (2018/2019), continued to showcase his signature blend of heartfelt vocals and uplifting messages.
